“Your classic small town has four bars, four churches, and just enough sinners to keep ‘em all in business.” — Michael Perry

It’s almost five o’clock somewhere, so grab a Friday brewski and listen to our new podcast featuring Jared Schultz, founder of viral sensation Wisco Dive Bars.

If there’s one thing that epitomizes the heart and soul of small-town Wisconsin, it’s the dive bars—those charming, quirky establishments where locals gather to share drinks, stories, and camaraderie. For Jared Schutz, founder of Wisco Dive Bar Reviews, exploring these taverns isn’t just a hobby—it’s a full-fledged mission to document the people, places, and traditions that make Wisconsin dive bars unique.

Since January 2022, Jared has visited over 700 bars across the state, creating a video series highlighting these establishments' rich culture. In our recent conversation for The Jaunt Podcast, Jared shared insights into what makes Wisconsin’s dive bars so unique, his reviews' impact on small businesses, and some memorable stops along the way.

The Birth of Wisco Dive Bar Reviews

Jared’s journey began with a simple question at work: “How many bars are there in Wisconsin?” That thought sparked an idea, and within a day, he was creating content about dive bars on TikTok.

His first video, featuring Langer’s Bar near Ellsworth, garnered over half a million views, and Wisco Dive Bar Reviews was born. Since then, Jared has traveled to small towns and hidden gems, showcasing the vibrant and quirky dive bar scene.

What Makes Wisconsin Dive Bars Special?

For Jared, Wisconsin dive bars are more than places to grab a cheap drink—they’re cultural institutions. Many are steeped in history, with some dating back over a century. He describes them as “time capsules,” where generations of memories are etched into the walls.

Unique traditions like the Shake of the Day and pull tabs add to their charm, and Jared highlights the welcoming atmosphere found in these establishments. Whether it’s a bartender who knows everyone by name or a patron sharing stories over a beer, these bars foster a sense of community that’s increasingly rare.

The Social Impact of Wisco Dive Bar Reviews

One of the most rewarding aspects of Jared’s work has been hearing from bar owners about how his reviews have revitalized their businesses. He shared a story about The Outpost, a bar near New Richmond, Wisconsin that turned its reputation around after Jared’s video drew locals back. For Jared, it’s a testament to the power of community and the importance of supporting small businesses.

Memorable Stops on the Dive Bar Trail

Jared’s travels have taken him to countless memorable bars, but a few stand out. Click the map to see each location.

See all these locations on our map by clicking here.

Pete’s Garage Bar (Oshkosh): Known for its sarcastic, quirky staff and excellent burgers.

Plywood Palace: A beloved icon recommended more than any other bar.

Buckwheats Resort (Ojibwa): A divey spot in a mobile home with just eight barstools.

White Creek Tavern (near the Wisconsin Dells): A “hoarder’s bar” that’s as unique as it is historic.

The Future of Dive Bars

Jared recognizes the challenges facing small town taverns, from economic pressures to generational shifts. Yet, he remains optimistic. He believes dive bars are experiencing a resurgence, with people appreciating their affordability and authenticity. For Jared, each visit is a chance to preserve a slice of Wisconsin history and celebrate the people who make these places unique.

Exploring Jared’s Hometown: Spring Valley, Wisconsin

Jared hails from Spring Valley. Tucked in the beautiful rolling hills of West-Central Wisconsin, the town is in two different counties: Pierce and St. Croix.

With a population of over a thousand folks, it echoes the true small town charm and is a mix of agriculture and forests. The famous Ellsworth Cheese Factory is a little over ten minutes away, and the town is just far enough from the Twin Cities to feel like you’re truly in the country.

One of the tourist landmarks the town is known for is Crystal Cave, the state’s longest cavern.

Jared’s go-to food stop is A Butchery Shoppe, a modern take on an old-school butcher shop specializing in clean-label products such as broths, soups, and prepared foods.

If you’re looking for Jared’s local tavern, it’s The Spillway, a cozy local hangout featuring beer, cocktails, bar games, live music and sports on TV.
