This is the first in a weekly series in which we’ll take you to American towns that are off the interstate to show you places you’ve never been and the people who make them unique. We hope this series helps you get excited about exploring America. These are some places to get you started.
First stop: Deary, Idaho, population: 506
A piece of American history has been lovingly restored in the rolling hills of Deary, Idaho, nestled between the Palouse and timber country. Webb French, a passionate preservationist, has transformed a 1908 train car into unique lodging, blending history, craftsmanship, and the quiet beauty of rural Idaho.
During my conversation with Webb for an upcoming episode of The Jaunt Podcast, we delved into the story of this remarkable restoration and its connection to the region’s heritage. The train car, once a passenger and mail carrier for the Washington Idaho & Montana railway, was destined for destruction. Rescued from a barn where it had been used to feed cattle, Webb spent eight months restoring it to its former glory. Today, the train car offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in history while enjoying modern comforts and breathtaking views.
Webb’s dedication to preserving the past doesn’t stop with the train car. From restoring the local train depot in Potlatch to enhancing his other historical properties, Webb has created experiences celebrating small-town charm and authentic rural life. As he aptly puts it, “American travel is about finding those places that make you want to stay a little longer.”
Here are five things that make a trip to Deary a memorable experience:
🥾 Hike Spud Hill: A 4,500-foot vantage point offering stunning 360-degree views of the region, including glimpses into Washington.
🍰 Visit the Pie Safe Bakery: Known for its breakfast, lunch, and monthly reservation-only Saturday dinners. Don’t miss the cinnamon rolls or raspberry Danish.
🚂 Explore the Potlatch Train Depot: A beautifully restored two-story depot showcasing the history of the Potlatch Timber Corporation and local railroads.
🛌 Stay in Webb’s Historic Train: Stay in a restored 1909 train car with a sauna and hot tub. Set amid forest and wheat fields with beautiful views. Spectacular night skies and lots of solitude round out the experience.
🧀 Sample Cheese: At the Brush Creek Creamery, taste handmade award-winning cheeses from Jersey cows milked at a small-scale creamery.
